Check when to seek safety during heavy rain forecasts

When heavy rain begins to fall, it can be hard to determine when to take action to ensure your safety. Systems that provide real-time risk assessments, as well as information from the Japan Meteorological agency and Kashiwa City, can help you with that decision.

 Information to Check 1

A system for tracking rainfall and manhole water levels

Inquiry: Sewerage Engineering Division

TEL: 7167−1429 FAX 7167−1165

When sudden heavy surge in rain water exceeds the capacity of the drainage systems, rain water can overflow from manholes and stormwater drains. The city’s underground water level monitoring system (RisKma), allows us to check the levels of these hidden underground pools and rainfall in real time. By detecting changes before overflow occurs, you can take early action to ensure safety.

Information to Check 2

Information from the Japan Meteorological Agency and Kashiwa City for your safety actions

Inquiry: Disaster Prevention and Safety Division

TEL: 7167-1115 FAX 7163-2188

The Japan Meteorological Agency’s disaster prevention weather information serves as a useful guide for assessing the current level of danger. The city will announce evacuation orders for affected areas via the official Kashiwa City LINE account, television and radio.

Furthermore, heavy rain conditions can vary significantly by area, and danger levels can escalate rapidly. If you feel you are in danger, please evacuate as soon as possible without waiting for an evacuation order.

On the other hand, even if an evacuation order has been issued, if moving outdoors is dangerous, it is important to ensure your safety by moving to a higher place inside a building. In all cases, those who are in higher risk areas for flooding or landslides need to be extra cautious.

Practice sweating now: heatstroke prevention during rainy season

Inquiry: General Affairs and Planning Division

TEL: 7167-1255 FAX 7167-1732

We tend to think this time of the year is still cool, but temperature and humidity can suddenly spike, and the risk of heatstroke sharply increases. It is important to get used to the heat now.

Prepare your body for summer with “Heat Acclimation”

One cause of heatstroke is your body not used to the heat. When you cannot perspire properly, heat gets trapped inside your body, leading to heatstroke. To prevent this, we recommend getting your body used to the heat before the hot and humid weather fully arrives. It is called “Heat acclimation.” By ‘practise sweating’ on a daily basis through light exercise or taking a bath, your body will adapt to summer more easily.  Let’s start building a body that can handle both heavy rain and intense heat from now.

Sample practices of “Heat Acclimation”

Walking/Jogging

30 minutes of walking per session/ 15 minutes of jogging per session ※Aim for around 5 days a week.

Cycling

30 minutes per session ※Aim for around 3 times a week.

Muscle training or stretching

30 minutes per session ※Aim for 5 times a week.

Soaking in a bathtub
