The national census is the most important statistical survey in this country, done once every 5 years. This year marks the 100th year of the national census. This census applies to everyone living in Japan, regardless of nationality or age. In this publication, we will show you how to respond to the national census easily.

How to respond to the census

Census documents will be delivered

Census documents will be delivered by Wednesday, September 30.

Due to the effects of Covid-19, this census will be contactless, and the census workers will not perform the census in person. Census workers will deliver an internet census response guide, and a postal census response form to all residential mailboxes for each household by Wednesday, September 30. When you receive the documents, please respond promptly using either method.

How census responses are collected

Census response by mail

Postal reception: Thursday, October 1 to Wednesday, October 7 (postmarked date is valid).

Those who do not have internet access can also respond by mail. After filling out the census form, please double-check to make sure that there are no errors or omissions.

Census response by internet

Internet reception: By Wednesday, October 7

The internet can be used “Anytime and Anywhere”.

Census responses by internet can be received 24 hours a day, at any time during the census period. Even people who are extremely busy at work or with housework can respond easily to the census during a free moment such as while commuting or taking a break.
